History of the Oreo® Cookie
The Oreo® cookie is perhaps the world’s favorite chocolate sandwich cookie, but what are the origins of this delectable treat? It all started when in 1898, several companies merged to create the National Biscuit Company, or Nabisco.
Then, in 1912, Nabisco came up with the concept of a chocolate sandwich cookie with a cream-filled center. The cookie was trademarked as an “Oreo Biscuit” on March 14, 1912. In 1921, the name was changed to “Oreo Sandwich”. 1937 brought another name change to “Oreo Creme Sandwich”. In 1974, the name would change again to “Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookie”. 1991 brought the addition of the Halloween Oreo, and 1995 the Christmas Oreo.
